ON THE AIR ....

The other day … we had the chance to host an auction on TV for a charity.

I don’t like being on TV … it shows off every flaw. And, I have a bunch of them! I know I have a face for radio!

But … one thing the TV cameras did not pick up (and the viewers could not see at home) were my hearing aids.

If you recall … I suffer from a slight to moderate hearing loss. I describe it as trying to read in a dimly lit room. I can hear most things … but sometime really have to strain.

Quiet Please ...

I had the chance to play golf the other day. This was the first time I played the game wearing hearing aids. I noticed a couple of things.

First of all, I was able to hold a conversation with my fellow golfers … and understand them. You know how you sometimes have to whisper on the golf course.

Secondly, I noticed how comfortable my hearing aids are when playing the game. They never bothered me or felt like they were going to fall out each time I teed off. They didn’t help my game … but they didn’t bother me.

ADMIT YOU HAVE A PROBLEM

Have you ever noticed … that sometimes it’s hard to admit we have a problem? OK … It may be a little harder for some than others.

I’m a good example. I didn’t want to admit that I had a hearing problem. I thought that if I didn’t admit it … then the problem would go away. It doesn’t work that way.

Favorite Time of the Year

You know … this is one of my favorite weeks of the year. This week … I can see (in person) NASCAR racing in all 3 divisions … TRUCK – NATIONWIDE & CUP.

I really enjoy watching the racing in person. You just can’t beat the sound of a high performance engine revving-up.

I did something really dumb the other day. I went to see a movie & FORGOT my hearing aids.

I noticed my mistake moments after we left for the theater, but we were running late. If I turned around (and got them) I would have missed the start of the movie.

So … I sat thru the new Sandra Bullock movie, asking my wife to repeat certain lines. Once again, I had trouble understanding some of the dialog.

Father of the Bride ...

I had one of those life changing events about 2 weeks ago. My oldest daughter tied the knot. I now have a son-in-law.
And during the ceremony … I never missed a word!

Better driver???

Since I got my OTICON DUAL hearing aids from one of the Whisper Hearing Centers here in town I have become a better driver!

Now before you think I have totally lost it … let me explain.

Before for I got the hearing aids, I had to turn the volume up on my car radio … just so I could hear the music. And as a result, I would drown out any out-side noise.

Now, I don’t have to turn the radio up as loud. And the other day, I was able to hear the siren of a police car … much earlier than before. And … that makes me a safer driver!!

Age has nothing to do with hearing loss!!!

Since I have been talking about my hearing loss on the radio, hardly a day goes by that someone does not stop me and ask about my hearing aids.

They usually want to see them … they don’t believe that I wear hearing aids.

People tell me that they also suffer from a hearing loss … but they think they are too young to wear hearing aids.

Look, I’m 46 years old, and age has nothing to do with my hearing loss.

If you can’t see clearly … you get glasses. And, if you can’t hear properly … you should get hearing aids.

If you are suffering from ANY level of hearing loss … then you need to go to the experts that can solve your problem.

I don’t mean one of those stores that just sell hearing aids, I mean the experts.

I can hear you!!

Let me you in on a secret. Or at least … I thought it was a secret. I have a hearing loss. I thought I was the only one that noticed it … but I wasn’t. My wife, kids and co-workers they all knew it. My hearing loss is not severe. It's like trying to read in a dimly lit room. I can hear most things, but I really have to strain.

I’m not sure “how” or “when” my problem started. It more than likely has something to do the volume of the headphones I wear. I have worked in radio for 28 years.

About 6 months ago I decided to visit on the Whisper Hearing Centers. In one short visit (and a couple of re-checks) they solved my hearing problem! I admitted the other day on the radio that I have a hearing loss. Or ... I should say ... use to! I now wear hearing aids.

Over the years, I got pretty good at lip reading. However, I didn't always get it right. Its amazing how the phrase: WAIT IN THE VAN and GO RIDE WITH STAN can look the same when lip reading!

When I first put on my new hearing aids, I could not believe what I heard ( and what I had been missing). My hearing loss is like trying to read in a dimly lit room. I can hear most things, but I really have to strain.
